According to the Better Business Bureau, if you receive a call from someone named Jessica, and you don’t know a ‘Jessica’, you may be the target of a scam that has been on the rise across the country these past few months. Apparently Jessica is from a loan processing company and she needs to verify some details for your loan application.
Our first thought when reading the article from the BBB was that these scammers must be targeting people who have applied for a loan. But no, everyone seems to be fair game because apparently people who have not applied for a loan are willingly handing over sensitive information such as income, credit card number, bank account info, or other personal details. This is a phishing scam designed to part you from your money, plain and simple.
If you do happen to get a call from Jessica, or Joanne, or Jill, or anyone that leaves a message or tells you that they need to verify details of your loan, and you did not apply for a loan, then why on earth would you call them back? Just ignore the message and block the number.
If you did happen to apply for a loan recently, you should still not call them back. Instead, go to the website of the institution where you applied for the loan and inquire about the legitimacy of the message there. No matter how legitimate the message seems, do your research. You may get multiple calls a day from different numbers, but don’t fall for it. Just keep blocking the numbers.
Of course, all bets are off the table if Jessica happens to be the name of your daughter or wife. Then you may want to call her back to avoid getting into trouble at home.
