Featured on Wired.com, this is one of the more disturbing, but not surprising scams leveraging AI technology. You can find the full details and overview of how this scam worked on Wired. Just imagine being sent an email or a link to a video which appears to be an official news clip from a recognizable television news station where the news anchor is reporting on a ‘just uncovered sex scandal’ involving none other than you!

Believe it or not, these scammers are using AI generated news anchors to report the fake stories. They will mention the victim by name and use AI doctored compromising images pulled from social media accounts or other online sources. And they are believable. The ultimate goal of the scammers is to blackmail victims into paying large sums of money. These scams usually target men and are often related to sexual assault claims brought forward by young women.

As is the case with all scams, be alert and cautious whenever you receive an unsolicited email, text, or phone call. If someone is attempting to blackmail you or extort money, notify law enforcement.
